Fiberglass vs. Metal Replica Bodies: Questions to Compare

Compare the actual body specifications and the work your builder will undertake. Our supplied body is fiberglass; its 1954 reference shape does not make its construction identical to the original.

Compare products, not material labels alone

A material name does not provide a complete body specification. Ask each supplier for the panel list, dimensions, weight if available, supplied surface condition and relevant construction details. Those facts are more useful than a broad claim that one material is always better.

Our website does not publish a verified weight, laminate schedule or comparison test. Do not calculate a promised weight saving, strength advantage or installation time from a photograph or from the word fiberglass. Get the applicable information before making a decision that depends on it.

Look at how the panels are divided

The body’s visible shape and the way its pieces are made are separate questions. For this replica, the wheel-arch eyebrow forms are integrated into the fiberglass shell, while the early reference used separate pieces. That difference can affect the questions you ask about what arrives as an individual part.

Request the actual supplied panel and interior piece list. Compare the scope of two proposals directly rather than assuming bodies with the same silhouette have the same number of pieces or the same interfaces.

Ask your workshop about its scope

The workshop should explain what information it needs for mounting, fitting and finishing the proposed body. Ask it to review the supplied condition and any manufacturer instructions before quoting its work. Keep the body purchase price distinct from the cost of completing the job.

Discuss how doors, glazing and trim will be coordinated with the selected shell. These interfaces deserve their own review regardless of the material category. A specific build plan is more useful than treating a material choice as an automatic solution to fitment.

Make a decision from confirmed requirements

List the reasons a particular body suits your project: the shape, available components, clear supply scope, workable builder relationship and confirmed specifications. Mark unanswered questions before committing.

For our US-made fiberglass body, start with the commercial body page and reference story, then ask sales for the details your builder requires. Avoid assuming historical construction methods transfer to the new reproduction.
